About the Storm Program

Approximately 150 children participate annually in the Squantum Storm Football and Cheerleading programs which are supported by 40+ coaches and volunteers. These volunteers include some 25 cheerleading and football coaches. That’s approximately 1 coach for every 10 kids.

Leading the volunteer group are Nathan Knowles, Head Football Coach Micheal Killilea, Cheerleading Advisers Judi Smith, Jen Buckley and Debbie Dyer, and fundraising organizers Lisa Chin, Michele Corey, Diane O’Connor, Kelly Norris and Rachel Leschernier.

Bring your appetite to the Quincy Food Truck festival 9/26

Quincy is hosting it’s first ever Food Truck Festival at Pageant Field featuring cuisine from over 20 trucks. Featuring a variety of dishes, there will be something for everyone.

Bring your blankets and lawn chairs, as well as the kids and Fido (as long as he remains on-leash at all times). Visitors are encouraged to picnic while listening to music and kids can enjoy free face painting.

Boston is hosting a fireworks spectacular Saturday night. What do you think, Squantumites? Get a view from the seawall? The fireworks will be simulcast on radio station 106.7 and NECN.

Battle of the Barges to be broadcast on NECN and MAGIC 106.7

The mayor is sponsoring a “battle of the barges” fireworks show in Boston Harbor. Barges anchored off the North End and Seaport will illuminate the skyline with spectacular volleys set to music. The fireworks and music will also be televised live on New England Cable News beginning at 8:30pm, with music also broadcast on MAGIC 106.7 beginning at 9pm EST.

Sally Wainwright shares that the Squantum Book Club is reading The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman for their August 4 meeting. The club meets at the First Church the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm and welcomes new members.

August 4: The Dovekeepers, by Alice Hoffman
The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman’s most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of imagination and research, set in ancient Israel.

In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman’s novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. Yael’s mother died in childbirth, and her father, an expert assassin, never forgave her for that death. Revka, a village baker’s wife, watched the horrifically brutal murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers; she brings to Masada her young grandsons, rendered mute by what they have witnessed. Aziza is a warrior’s daughter, raised as a boy, a fearless rider and an expert marksman who finds passion with a fellow soldier. Shirah, born in Alexandria, is wise in the ways of ancient magic and medicine, a woman with uncanny insight and power.

The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets—about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love. The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman’s masterpiece.

Cycling around town with Quincycles

It’s been a glorious summer, Squantumites, and a perfect one for hitting the road on your two-wheeler. Looking for some peeps to cycle around town with? Join a group cycle hosted by Quincycles and enjoy the fresh air while exploring the town on your bike, and relax with a cuppa jo after with some new friends. Squantum is a regular stop for the group, with a ride coming up on July 18.

Meet at Squantum Point Park

Route: We will ride out from Squantum Point Park along the water to The Best Western Hotel – a great route to know for crossing the Neponset Bridge; then back to the bike path leading to Quincy Shore Drive and the Causeway. To finish we will go out the Marina Rd. and end with coffee at Cream and Sugar in Marina Bay.

Sea to Summit Ride

Route: Follow the scenic MAPC Sea to Summit Route up to the Chickatawbut Overlook and then out to Nut Island in Hough’s Neck. Finish back at the Bernazzani School and head around the corner for coffee at Montilio’s Bakery.

Quincycles is a group of Quincy residents advocating for bicycle infrastructure on our city streets and promoting responsible bicycling as a means of transportation, recreation, and exercise in Quincy. The group hosts group cycling rides and workshops in addition to hosting monthly meetings.

The group is resident led and organized and encourages participation from bicyclists of all types: commuter or recreational, year-round or seasonal, in all types of weather or only on warm sunny days, long-distance or short-distance, every once-in-awhile or every single day. Pop into Quincy’s pop-up art gallery Friday nights in July

As Quincy continues the revitalization project downtown, Discover Quincy is taking advantage of some vacant retail space to spin up the area’s creativity with a pop-up art gallery that is the site of Friday night happenings.

Head over to the Center Friday nights in July to meet the artists while enjoying some live entertainment and beverages at the cash bar. The space previously home to Woolworth’s has been transformed into an art gallery and four pop-up shops. The gallery showcases more than 200 works of art by about 70 local artists.

The Gallery is free and open to the public at 64 Ross Way in Quincy Center, and features live entertainment, a cash bar, and local art for sale.

This week Honey Sauce Band headlines at The Gallery. A Quincy band with roots all over the world, Honey Sauce Band is adored for their funk and experimental disco experience. Featuring Saucy Lady on vocals, Yuki “monolog” Kanesaka on keys, and Takafumi Nikaido on percussion.

Quincy Flag Day Parade and Celebration, 7pm June 13

Parade route

The parade steps-off on Coddington Street, makes its way to Hancock Street, turns right onto Merrymount Parkway, and ends at the entrance to Pageant Field. Nearly 2,000 young people from across the City will march with American flags.

The parade culminates in a celebration at Pageant Field with a flag-raising, the presentation of the Richard J. Koch Memorial Youth Service Award, and a patriotic performance and sing-a-long.

Fireworks

The evening wraps up with a spectacular fireworks display over Black’s Creek that will kick off around 9 p.m.

Another glorious weekend to remind us why we love Squantum and our seaside view on summer. The pinnacle of Squantum’s year is just over a month away. As Squantmites prepare their gardens and hang their flags we know what’s on your mind…will the armchair brigade march again this year? What kiddie creatures might march through town on July fourth? That’s the spirit folks… Paula and the July Fourth Parade Committee are calling out for floats, marchers, bands, and Grand Marshall nominations for the big day!

What a glorious weekend! Such a treat to see the flowers blossoming and neighbors out enjoying a walk around the neighborhood after our winter. As we embrace these warmer days, the Squantum Community Association invites you to join us for a guided tour of historic spots around our peninsula. We’re running two identical tours at 11 AM and 1 PM.

A rich history
Our seaside community is chock full of wonderful historic sites that hearken back to some fascinating characters and lively times. Squantumite Glen Buscher has assembled a guided tour of spots highlighting the inns and homes that once provided a summer escape for day-trippers and Boston families who arrived by steamboat and travelled by trolley to our beautiful seaside peninsula in the 1700-1900s. As we take this trip down memory lane, Squantum’s street names will come to life as we revisit the spots where one-time Squantumites took respite, including entertainer Lotta Crabtree and Captain James Huckins.

Transportation
Thanks to the generosity of one of our neighbors, we’ll have a van and bus and can give a lift to up to 35 people for each of the tours.
