Squaw Rock Clean Up 9/6 Saturday

Squaw RockA group of Squantumites have organized a clean up at Squaw Rock. Join the effort and help clean up trash and debris littering this beautiful Squantum treasure.
Neighbors hope with a little love and care, we may set an example for people who visit the area to keep it clean for everyone to enjoy.

Grab your Squantum peeps, some gloves, and head on over!

When: Saturday, September 6, 9 am – 1pm

Where: Check-in at the Nickerson Post parking lot, and please sign in on the sign in sheet.
20 Moon Island Rd, Squantum, MA.

Please note: there is an event at Nickerson Post on Saturday afternoon and we want to keep the parking lot clear. If you can walk to the event that will be helpful, and please move card promptly so they can have room for the afternoon event.

What to bring/wear:

  • Wear comfortable clothes. We strongly encourage people to wear long sleeves and pants for cover (there is some poison ivy in the area).
  • Wear sturdy closed toe shoes
  • Bring your own work gloves. Some gloves will be available (about 50 pair)
  • If you’re going to be helping with cutting back some of the brush, use eye protection too!

Register: Please email Eric Davis to let him know if you plan to join this effort.

Update Fri 9/5:

Eric Davis sent out the following update and plan for the clean up on Saturday:

Supplies:

  • We’re working with the City of Quincy and Parks Department to try and get some materials from them for collecting everything (mainly heavy duty trash bags).
  • We could use a few more carts or wheelbarrows – these will be used to help bring the trash and brush out from the trails to specified collection points.
  • If you’re interested in helping to cut back the brush, bring the appropriate tools (cutters, loppers, trimmers, etc.). The brush isn’t too heavy, but in some places it’s starting to crowd the main trails.

Work plan:

Our plan is to attack the three main trails going out to Squaw Rock with some people working back from the Rock. The trash isn’t too bad, so we should be able to spend some time also working on the brush. Ideally we’d like to make sure that the trail is at least arm’s width (in several places it isn’t). If we have enough people and time, we would like to begin working on opening up the trail that goes over to the beach (facing Moon Island). There’s a bigger project to clean up that area, but if we can get the trail opened up more, the city can bring in bigger equipment to help (hopefully).

Poison Ivy caution

  • There is poison Ivy at this site. It typically has three leaves together and the tops of the leaves are shiny. Anyone who is not familiar with it please ask around or talk with Dave Blaton.
  • Note that if you wear gloves and touch it, the oils remain on the gloves and can be transmitted later if you touch the gloves or your skin.

Shoot Eric or Steven a message if you have any questions. A big thanks from Eric and Steven for helping out!!!

About Quincy Parks Conservancy
The mission of Quincy Parks Conservancy, Inc. is to protect and promote park lands, beaches, parkways and other open spaces within the City of Quincy, Massachusetts for the use and enjoyment of Quincy residents, visitors and tourists.

The City of Quincy owns 52 municipal park locations situated on over 320 acres of public land, 10 municipal beach areas and numerous other open space areas. The City’s parks already provide resources for a wide variety of activities from playgrounds for small children, to walking trails to basketball courts, softball fields and skateboard parks. The Quincy Parks Conservancy can add considerable value for the residents and visitors of Quincy in a number of ways, but stewardship is chief among them.

Continuing and building upon the park system plan started by Charles Francis Adams II and Frederick Law Olmstead in 1885, the Quincy Parks Conservancy will work with the City of Quincy and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with planning, restoration and maintenance projects on such lands and open spaces; and promote events and programs that contribute to preservation, enhancement and appreciation of the natural environment and public open spaces, and historic sites. On this Memorial Day weekend,
the Seaside Gardeners of Squantum invite you

ceremony to honor the men and women who have served, are currently serving, or will serve in the Armed Forces of the United States.

The Seaside Gardeners have arranged to place a Blue Star Memorial By-Way plaque at the Squantum Fire Station to commemorate and honor these men and women.

History of Blue Star Memorials
The Blue Star Memorial program was created in 1945 at the close of World War II by the National Garden Clubs, Inc., as a means of honoring men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces. Garden Club members visualized a living memorial, helping to beautify and preserve the country these men and women fought for. Today, the mission is to honor all men and women who have served, are serving, or will serve in the Armed Forces of the United States.
