Meet At-Large City Council Candidates Nov 1

Join the Squantum Community Association on November 1 to meet the candidates running for three At-Large seats on the Quincy City Council. Come meet the candidates interested in serving our community. At this informal gathering (not a debate) each candidate will share their thoughts in an opening statement and residents will be invited to pose questions. Residents wishing to send questions for the candidates in advance can email the SCA and we will pose them to the candidates on your behalf.

Drop off your hazardous waste at the DPW Oct 7

Pack up your household hazardous waste and head over to the Fall DPW drop-off day for Quincy residents. Head over early as the line often wraps around Sea Street onto Southern Artery. Proof of residency is required (driver’s license or tax bill).

This year the event will also feature paper shredding provided by Bay State.

The City of Quincy provides this free service to assist residents in the proper disposal of hazardous waste and to protect our environment.

What can you drop off?

Some of the eligible items for disposal are oil and latex based paints, thinners, strippers, oils and varnishes, all household cleaners including drain and plumbing cleaners, automotive fluids including oil and gasoline, chemical fertilizers and insecticides, polishes, ni-cad and lithium batteries, roofing tar and driveway sealants.

When gathering products for the drop-off event leave materials in original containers and tighten all caps and lids. Sort and pack items separately in sturdy upright boxes. Never mix chemicals.  Pack your car the morning of the event and drive directly to the DPW. Do not smoke while handling hazardous material and do not bring children in the car with you.

Items not accepted at the hazardous materials drop-off day are latex paint, tires, ammunition, fireworks and explosives, commercial/industrial/biological waste, prescription medicine and radioactive waste.

Join the Squantum Community Association on August 30 to meet the candidates running for the Ward 6 seat on the Quincy City Council. Come meet our three neighbors interested in serving our community. At this informal gathering (not a debate) each candidate will share their thoughts in an opening statement and residents will be invited to pose questions. The council seat in Ward 6 serves Squantum, Marina Bay, and parts of North Quincy. Residents wishing to send questions for the candidates in advance can email the SCA and we will pose them to the candidates on your behalf.

Squantum Road RaceLooks like it’s shaping up to be a fabulous July 4th holiday weekend! Kick it off on Saturday at the annual road race sponsored by Bruce Ayers. Grab your peeps and run around the hood while supporting the July Fourth parade!

PorchFest brings music and a Beer Garden to Squantum, June 24

Get ready for music and dancing in the streets on
Saturday, June 24! After the great success of last year, PorchFest Quincy is returning to Squantum from 4–8 PM, bringing bands to porches and driveways across our neighborhood. Festivities are rain or shine and extend from 1–8 PM across Quincy.

A new addition this year…you can grab some nosh at food trucks at the Wollaston Elementary Schoolyard, or a cold one at the Beer Garden in Squantum. Locations for these two sites are being added to the online map.

PorchFests are free, live music events held on front porches across a city. PorchFest music festivals bring local bands, singers, and instrumentalists together with neighbors to enjoy music of any genre. Music can range from country to pop, classical to reggae, and everything in between—blues, rock, jazz, Latino, R&B—anything goes! Performances are staggered throughout the afternoon so neighbors can walk from yard to yard enjoying each other and the great music.

It’s another glorious start to summer in Squantum and the pinnacle of our year is just around the corner. We spotted Jim and crew hanging flags along the parade route and that means one thing…you’re planning your red, white, and blue, and gathering the neighbors to come up with your award-winning float ideas! Give Paula and the July Fourth Parade Committee a call today and sign up your floats and marchers and send in your Grand Marshall nominations for the big day!

Get the neighbors and kids together and start dreaming up your float ideas for a chance to win a cash prize! Kids and adult floats are welcome. The winning float will have a sign posted on their street for a week announcing the coveted victory. Good luck!

Marchers of all kinds are welcome to join the parade! Little groups, big groups, individuals, marchers in costumes, as well as Local Youth Sports are welcome to march. Decorate your baby carriages and wagons and join the festivities!

The committee is accepting nominations for the Parade Grand Marshall.

Select from lush hanging baskets, pretty annuals in an assortment of colors to match your garden color scheme, and beautiful perennials nurtured by garden club members and featured garden centers.

Head to the Kennedy Center for a fascinating up-close encounter with owls. This intergenerational program hosted by the Quincy Council on Aging is open to grandparents, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and owl fans of all ages!

A program for owl and bird enthusiasts
Everyone loves owls! Yet, how often do you get to see an owl up close? Perhaps you’ve glimpsed the shadowy form of a Great-horned Owl in the beam of your headlights as you traveled a back road at night. Have you ever scanned a frozen saltmarsh or hayfield in winter, hoping to find that arctic hunter, the Snowy Owl? How about that mob of noisy crows circling a white pine tree? Have they found an owl? Join teacher/naturalist Marcia Wilson and author/photographer/naturalist Mark Wilson in sharing their passion for owls.

In this program, Mark and Marcia Wilson will introduce you to the owls of New England and beyond. The Wilsons will share the field marks, signs, and naturalist’s skills that you can use to find wild owls without disturbing them.

Meet the owls
Attendees will actually get to meet six live owls (from small to huge) up close! The Wilsons will lead the group in a hooting lesson, and will share tips on how to attract and protect owls near you. We’re not sure which owls will be present, but chances are you’ll meet New England’s tiniest owl, the Northern Saw-Whet Owl (weighing in at 4 ounces) along with the world’s largest owl, the Eurasian Eagle Owl (check out that five foot wingspan!). Other species that figure prominently in the Wilson’s program can include Eastern Screech Owl, Barred Owl, Barn Owl, Great-horned Owl, Snowy Owl and Spectacled Owl. Owl pellets and white wash are topics of great interest and the Wilsons will spend time dissecting these fascinating aspects of owl biology. For many middle and elementary schools, this ties directly to the science curriculum of the students. Explore owls on the Wilson’s website.
