COASTSWEEP, the Massachusetts Annual Statewide Beach Cleanup
Now in it’s 25th year, COASTSWEEP is the annual state-wide coastal cleanup sponsored by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management and coordinated by the Urban Harbors Institute of UMASS Boston. Each year, more than 2,000 COASTSWEEP volunteers collect several tons of trash from beaches, marshes, rivers, ponds, and the seafloor. They also record information about the types and amounts of debris found, and this data is sent to the Ocean Conservancy where it is analyzed and used to minimize marine debris worldwide.
