Old Ironsides Sails Again

Our neighbor on Orchard Beach sent in these great photos of Old Ironsides sailing today. Monica writes “I was sitting on my deck sipping my morning tea when I spotted Old Ironsides under sail in Boston Harbor! Such a treat. She looked like Mother Ginger with all the little boats flocking around her on her voyage.”

The USS Constitution under sail for the first time in fifteen years, honoring Constitution’s bicentennial of the victory over the HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812.

Thanks for the great pics Monica!

Moswetuset Hummock-we drive by it everyday, but what’s it all about?

Did you know that Moswetuset Hummock is one of the oldest recognized historical sites in the nation as well as in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The historic Moswetuset Hummock sits on the north end of Wollaston beach overlooking Quincy Bay in eastern Massachusetts. Moswetuset, meaning “shaped like an arrowhead,” was the name of the Moswetuset or Massachusett Native American tribe from which the Commonwealth of Massachuesetts derives its name. The thickly-wooded hill was the summer seat of the tribe’s Sachem Chickatabot because of its view of the surrounding area and proximity to the bay, salt marshes, and the Blue Hills. It was here thatChickatabot met with Myles Standish of the Plymouth Colony in 1621 as the colonists began their early trade with the Indians.

Coyotes Sightings!

Wanted to give pet owners a heads-up. We have seen coyotes in the vicinity of the school (Standish Rd., Park Ave. Bellevue Rd., area) several times during the day in the past few weeks. They look like young coyotes who perhaps were separated from the adults in their pack. Just be aware if you are out walking your pet. They were seen at 7 a.m. and even once at 2 p.m.-Donna Mavromates

Happy 115th Birthday Amelia Earhart!

Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas, in America’s heartland. And today we celebrate her 115th birthday and learn more of her ties to Squantum!

In 1928, before flying as the first woman passenger in the First Transatlantic Flight in 1928, Earhart invested a small amount of money in the Dennison Airport which opened at the lower end of the Squantum Peninsula. Earhart acted as a chief employee and pilot at Dennison Airport. You can see more information about Dennison Airport at what is now Squantum Point Park. The park has great walking paths along the water with markers that depict historical information for the site as well as a giant compass laid out in stone on the waters edge.
