Every day we are reminded of the rich Native American heritage of Squantum and the surrounding harbor islands. Please join us to learn about the people who first walked our shores as we explore through story, study and song.
Study
Archaeologist Ellen Berkland, of the Department of Conservation and Recreation, will shed light on the Native American history of our area discovered through explorations of the Boston Harbor Islands.
Story
Hear stories of the people who first fished these waters, walked these shores, and lived on the land of Squantum and the harbor islands.
Song
Harry Young, “Gray Owl”, Hawk Clan Chief of Algonquin Seneca Me’tis heritage, Canada, will share drumming and songs of the northern woodland native heritage. Harry will explain the history and significance of these songs, and will appear in traditional regalia along with his wife and native shawl dancer, Deborah, “Gentle Doe Eyes”, of Azorian Pokanoket Me’tis heritage.

The Seaside Gardeners of Squantum invite you to their November 14th meeting for a presentation by Richard O’Mara, owner of Cedar Grove Gardens, entitled “Doorscapes and Home Entrance Decorations for the Holiday Season”. The presentation will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Classroom at the Kennedy Center. A limited number of seats are available. Door Decorating Contest

Help clean up Squantum Point Park marshlands on Saturday
Join neighbors to help clean up trash and debris littering beautiful walking paths along the marshlands in and around Squantum Point Park
When: Saturday, October 20, 8 a.m.
Where: Squantum Point Park, DCR parking lot. Meet at the pavilion / commuter shelter in the area of the parking lot facing Boston. (The park is at the end of Victory Road in Marina Bay, to the left of the Ocean Club.)
What to bring/wear:
- Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes
- Bring work gloves if you have them
- Dennis Leigh from Coastsweep and the Urban Harbors Institute at UMass/Boston will provide trash bags and gloves to assist with the clean-up.

COASTSWEEP, the Massachusetts Annual Statewide Beach Cleanup
Now in it’s 25th year, COASTSWEEP is the annual state-wide coastal cleanup sponsored by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management and coordinated by the Urban Harbors Institute of UMASS Boston. Each year, more than 2,000 COASTSWEEP volunteers collect several tons of trash from beaches, marshes, rivers, ponds, and the seafloor. They also record information about the types and amounts of debris found, and this data is sent to the Ocean Conservancy where it is analyzed and used to minimize marine debris worldwide.

Orchard Beach at Low Tide, Environmental Treasure talk
With UMASS Boston Professor Anamarija Frankic and Naturalist Peter Fifield
Presented by The Quincy Park Department
Learn about the exciting new field of biomimicry and the stories behind the “bones” of a shipwreck and the mysterious pilings offshore. Enjoy beautiful views and wander in tide pools exploring marine life. Bring a picnic!
When: Sunday, September 23, 11 a.m. (Rain date: Saturday October 6, 9 a.m.)
Where: Orchard Beach, Squantum
Meet at intersection of Huckins Ave. and Bayside Rd. Parking on Bayside Rd. is limited so park on any side street and walk to the beach.
What to bring:
- Wear sneakers, boots, hiking sandals or tie-on shoes that can get wet – the talk will include walking in shallow muddy water and on slippery rocks.
- Optional: binoculars
- Optional: bring a picnic to eat on Peterson’s Rocks at end of tour!

About the Quincy Park Department’s Environmental Treasures Program
The Park Department sponsors monthly nature or historic tours to highlight Quincy’s treasures. The Park Department procures a guide with expert knowledge in the chosen location or field of discussion. Programs usually last one to two hours. There is no charge for any of the Environmental Treasures programs.
