Hello Squantum! Hope you and your loved ones are healthy and getting ready for some relaxation as we head into this holiday season 2020. Since Santa was not able to join us at our annual tree lighting, he’s coming to a street near you! Get the kiddies ready for Santa’s big Squantum tour. Keep an eye out for his red pick up “sleigh” with flashing lights as he drives through our neighborhoods starting at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Note that Santa will not be able to stop or exit the vehicle for photos. We want to keep him safe for his big night coming up!

Join the Squantum Community Association for a chat with historian Bob Damon, who will share highlights from a heritage study he is conducting for the City of Quincy in advance of the Quincy 400 celebrations. Quincy has an incredibly rich stock of historical cultural capital, and Mr. Damon has been taking a closer look at the Quincy buildings, structures, and sites that have been identified as having importance at a national level, including sites in Squantum such as Squaw Rock. Mr. Damon will share with us the details of this exciting project and will lead a discussion about cultural capital, the ‘historical ecosystem,’ and the ways in which we value heritage here in Quincy.

New date: Wednesday, April 11
First Church of Squantum
164 Bellevue Rd, Squantum, MA (map)

Quincy is a city with a long and significant history. That history has been accumulated in layers over the centuries as the city has evolved from a colonial town to a center of American revolutionary thought and action, to a thriving shipbuilding and granite quarrying center, and now into a thriving suburban center. Throughout these eras, diverse groups of people have left a vibrant cultural, economic, and historical legacy, the remains of which can be found in the many physical structures and sites that connect us to these rich layers of the past. Examples include the remains of the Winthrop Iron Furnace, the Adams houses, the granite quarries, remaining structures from the era of the Fore River Shipyard, and the native American sites Moswetuset Hummock and Passanagesset.

Long-term care, management, and use are important parts of the larger heritage ecosystem surrounding any historic asset. By taking a careful look at the current preservation and management contexts of the City’s most prominent sites, we have the opportunity to learn how those sites are doing, what we can do to support them more effectively, and how to support the City’s historic heritage more broadly in the future.

We hope you can join us to learn more about this project.

Get a preview of Bob’s chat in this QATV interview.

Recently we learned that the City of Quincy plans to sue the drug industry for selling drugs knowing the risk of addiction. As noted in a recent Globe article, Quincy became one of the first cities in the country to give the overdose antidote Narcan to its first responders in 2010 and has tripled the size of its drug unit and sponsored a treatment center. Our city of 94,000 has witnessed 163 opioid-related deaths over the past five years. While we read about the crisis in the news every day, we see the impacts across our community, state, and nation. This issue hits us here at home.

On November 15, please join the Squantum Community Association for a conversation about this pervasive public health issue. The SCA has invited a great panel of experts to share their insights into the issues surrounding the origin of the opioid crisis, its impact on the community, and efforts to prevent abuse and to assist those who are addicted. You’ll have a chance to ask questions as we all seek to gain a greater understanding of this issue.

Discover a new neighbor or group
We’ve invited several Squantumites to share mini stories and updates about groups and activities happening in our neighborhood. We’ll hear from community group hosts, some volunteers with a taste for farm-fresh eats, a neighbor spotlighted for award-winning skills, and from a favorite shop owner and now neighbor who puts a smile on our faces with a friendly “ciao!”

We’d love to hear from you, too! Do you host a community group or activity in Squantum? Come along and let your neighbors know how to participate or join.

11 AM tour (meet at 10:45 AM)
1 PM tour (meet at 12:45 PM)
Departs from the Nickerson Post, 20 Moon Island Road, Squantum, MA
Rain or shine

What a glorious weekend! Such a treat to see the flowers blossoming and neighbors out enjoying a walk around the neighborhood after our winter. As we embrace these warmer days, the Squantum Community Association invites you to join us for a guided tour of historic spots around our peninsula. We’re running two identical tours at 11 AM and 1 PM.

A rich history
Our seaside community is chock full of wonderful historic sites that hearken back to some fascinating characters and lively times. Squantumite Glen Buscher has assembled a guided tour of spots highlighting the inns and homes that once provided a summer escape for day-trippers and Boston families who arrived by steamboat and travelled by trolley to our beautiful seaside peninsula in the 1700-1900s. As we take this trip down memory lane, Squantum’s street names will come to life as we revisit the spots where one-time Squantumites took respite, including entertainer Lotta Crabtree and Captain James Huckins.

Transportation
Thanks to the generosity of one of our neighbors, we’ll have a van and bus and can give a lift to up to 35 people for each of the tours.
